The commencement service for Spring Lake High School’s Class of 2017 will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2017.  Look for more details to come in April.


Class of 2016 Senior Scholars

Michael Gilchrist, Principal of Spring Lake High School, announces the 25 students designated as Senior Scholars in the Class of 2016. Senior Scholars are the twenty-five students who have earned the highest honors awarded in their graduating class using a combination of ACT composite, select courses, and grade point average to determine district rank.

Nora Adkins, daugther to Heidi and John Adkins

Activities and Awards: Nora was invited to attend the Excellence in Education Dessert at the Spring Lake Country Club on May 3 by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation. Throughout high school she was a member of the Task Force, the National Honor Society, and student council. She played basketball and soccer and was named Team Captain for both teams her senior year. Not only was she captain of the soccer team, but she earned the title of All Conference, All Regional, and All State Honorable Mention.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend either Milwaukee School of Engineering or Illinois Institute of Technology to study Architecture.

Lance Burt, son to Eve Lozicki and Derek Burt

Activities and Awards: Lance was invited to attend the Excellence in Education Dessert on May 3 by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation. Throughout high school he was an active member of Spring Lake’s Chapter of the National Honor Society and was a participant in the school’s ski club.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend either Michigan State University or Grand Valley State University to study Economics.

Meryn Campbell, daughter to Cynthia and Don Campell

Activities and Awards: Throughout high school Meryn was a member and Co-President of the Green Group, President of the National Honor Society, attended the Michigan Youth Leadership Conference, attended Girl’s State, and was a member of the We For She Group. She played varsity tennis all four years and played #1 singles since her sophomore year. She earned the honor of being named the Conference Champion and Regional Champion, and was All Conference Honorable Mention her freshmen year. Her sophomore and junior years she was All Conference, and was named Team Captain her senior year. She attended the Excellence in Education Dessert through the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation and was offered the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend the University of Michigan to study Geology and/or English.

Macayla Carrns, daughter to Sharon and John Carrns

Activities and Awards: Macayla has been involved in cross country, Business Professionals of America, Interact, Be Nice, the National Honor Society, and lacrosse. She was invited to attend the Excellence in Education Dessert that took place on May 3 at the Spring Lake Country Club . Her community volunteer efforts include working with the local food trucks and helping with childcare at her church.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Michigan State University to study Finance and Economics

Matthew Cassar, son to Deborah and Eric Cassar

Activities and Awards: Matthew was invited to attend the Excellence in Education Dessert that was put on by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation at the Spring Lake Country Club. Throughout high school he was involved in cross country, track, the sailing club, Spring Lake High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society, and attended Boy’s State.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Grand Valley State University’s Honors College to study Mechanical Engineering.

Mairead Cooper, daugther to Sheila Brow and Kent Cooper

Activities and Awards: Throughout high school Mairead was a member of the National Honor Society, the swim team all four years, and soccer. In swimming she qualified to compete at the state level three out of the four years. She was honored at the Excellence in Education Dessert in May by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, traveled to Europe, worked with the local food trucks, and has helped with the children’s ministry at her church.
Plans after graduation: Plans to possibly attend Hillsdale College to study Biology.

Anna Denslow, daugther to Renee and Erik Denslow

Activities and Awards: Anna was invited to attend the Excellence in Education Dessert by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation. She also attended Girl’s State. Throughout high school she played volleyball and was named Academic All State her senior year and was Team Captain of the varsity lacrosse team. She was a member of Calling All Colors, the Task Force, and Spring Lake High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society. Her volunteer efforts include working with the Bluebird Cancer Retreat, helping with the local food truck, and also the SCORE Reading Program.

Plans after graduation:  Plans to attend either Aquinas to play lacrosse, or Michigan State University or Grand Valley State University to study Pre-Medicine.

Remington French, daughter to Lara Ferrell and Kevin French

Activities and Awards: Remi was invited to the Excellence in Education Dessert put on by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation on May 3. While attending Spring Lake High School she was involved in many activities. These activities include running track, playing soccer, and playing basketball of which she was named First Team All Conference. This basketball team also won the Conference Championship and District Championship. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, Be Nice Group, the Task Force, Green Group, writing for the school newspaper, The Laker Anchor, and student council. Her volunteer efforts include being a volunteer basketball coach, helping at the Dr. Shaw Memorial Library in Maine, and working with the local food truck.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Wesleyan University to play basketball and study Economics and Neuroscience.

Tanner Hoag, son to Tereasa and Jeff Hoag

Activities and Awards: Throughout high school Tanner has been an active participant in Spring Lake High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society. He played lacrosse, ran track and played tennis of which he was named All Conference. He was honored at the Excellence in Education Dessert on May 3 at the Spring Lake Country Club by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend the University of Michigan to study Biology.

Benjamin Johnson, son to Lauren and Steven Johnson

Activities and Awards: In high school Ben was a member of Spring Lake’s Chapter of the National Honor Society. He also ran track his sophomore year. He was invited to be honored by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation at the Excellence in Education Dessert on May 3 that was held at the Spring Lake Country Club.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Grand Valley State University to study Biochemistry.

Kayla Krueger, daughter to Amy and Bill Krueger

Activities and Awards: Kayla was an active member of student council all four years of high school. She was a member of Interact and the National Honor Society. As a senior she was nominated to be the Athletic Female Representative for Spring Lake High School at Showcase, which took place in March at the Frauenthal Theatre in Muskegon. Her athletic interests include golf, soccer and basketball of which she was named Team Captain her senior year.  Kayla is a solid golfer and earned to opportunity to compete at the state level both her junior and senior years. Both years the team won the State Championship. She was also named All Conference and All State. Her volunteer efforts include working the food truck and collecting food for local pantries.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Valparaiso University to play golf and study Exercise Science.

Ellen Lauinger, daugther to Laura and Jeff Lauinger

Activities and Awards: Throughout high school Ellen was an active participant in basketball, lacrosse, and volleyball of which she was named Academic All State. Her senior year she was voted to be the Vice President of Spring Lake High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society and was also voted to be the Executive Student Council President. She attended the Excellence in Education Dessert put on by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation on May 3. She was offered the University of Michigan’s Regent Board Scholarship and was voted to be the Spring Lake Rotary Student of the Month in February for her stellar performance as an all-around student.
Plans after graduation: Plans to attend either the University of Michigan or Harvard University to study Biology and Chemistry.

Abby Moe, daughter to Cindy and Eric Moe

Activities and Awards: Abby was invited to attend the Excellence in Education Dessert that was put on by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation on May 3. Throughout high school she was a member of Spring Lake High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society and was an active participant in volleyball and track. In volleyball she received honors as First Team All Conference, First Team All Region, Second Team All Area, and Academic All State. In track she was also Academic All State. Her community service efforts include helping out in an elementary classroom all four years of high school and being an assistant coach for youth volleyball.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend the University of Michigan, Purdue University, or Michigan State University to study Engineering.

Alec Palmer, son to Kelly and Jim Palmer

Activities and Awards: Throughout high school Alec was actively involved in many activities. These activities include being a member of Interact, student council, and the National Honor Society. He attended Boy’s State and was invited to be on the board for the Spring Lake Sexual Education Curriculum. Alec played varsity soccer and varsity lacrosse all four years. In soccer he was recognized as All State Honorable Mention, First Team All Conference, and named Team Captain. In lacrosse he was recognized as Second Team All State, Academic All State, and was the Team Captain. Alec was also recognized as an Ottawa County Volunteer Star, a Scholastic Art Award Winner, and was honored at the Excellence in Education Dessert on May 3. His volunteer efforts included helping with The Little Red House, the Bluebird Cancer Retreats, and coaching youth lacrosse.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Augustana College to play lacrosse and study Pre-Medicine or Pre-Law.

Chase Palmer, son to Kelly and Jim Palmer

Activities and Awards: Chase was honored at the Excellence in Education Dessert on May 3 at Spring Lake Country Club. He has also been recognized for being an Ottawa Country Volunteer Star. Throughout high school was an active member of the National Honor Society and worked on the Benevolent Fund Board and Goals and Means Board. He was also nominated as President of student council his freshman year, was a member of Interact, and attended Boy’s State. He played soccer and lacrosse all four years. In soccer he was Team Captain his senior year and was Second Team All Conference, All District, and All Region. In lacrosse he was Team Captain and was Third Team All State and Academic All State. Chase’s volunteer efforts include working with The Little Red House, the Bluebird Cancer Retreat, helping with the local food truck, being a member on the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council, and coached youth lacrosse.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Augustana College to play lacrosse and study both Pre-Law and Business.

Allison Penington, daughter to Jane and Mark Pennington

Activities and Awards: In high school Allison was a member of Calling All Colors, the National Honor Society, Task Force, Crew Team, and played volleyball all four years. In volleyball she was Academic All State, was honored with the MIVCA Award (Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association), and attended the Excellence in Education Dessert at Spring Lake Country Club on May 3. She worked with the SCORE Reading Program, was a member of the Grand Haven Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council, was a youth volleyball coach, and read the Spring Lake High School’s Daily Announcements on WGHN every morning for three years. 

Plans after graduation:  Plans to attend a 4-year college to study Pre-Medicine.

Lucas Piekarski, son to Patricia and Mark Piekarski

Activities and Awards:  Lucas is an Eagle Scout. He has earned six (6) Eagle Scout Palms since earning the title of Eagle Scout. He is also a member of the Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow. While attending Spring Lake High School he ran cross country and track. In cross country he placed 10th at the State Meet. In track he was nominated as Team Captain. He has also been an active participant in Marching Band, the National Honor Society, the running club, chess club, and ski club. Lucas was honored at the Excellence in Education Dessert at Spring Lake Country Club by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation on May 3.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Michigan Technological University to study Mechanical Engineering.

Keon Rick, son to Donna and Peter Rick

Activities and Awards: Keon was honored at the Spring Lake Country Club on May 3 for the Excellence in Education Dessert that was put on by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation. While in high school he played lacrosse, ran cross country, and was a member of Interact, the National Honor Society, student council, and Green Group. All four years of high school he was a member of the track and swim teams of which he was named Team Captain his senior year for both sports. He had qualified to compete at the State Swim Meets all four years of high school. Keon’s volunteer efforts include working with the local food truck, attending a mission trip, and putting together a swim meet called Swim for Hope, that collected pledges for the fight of cancer. This fundraiser collected a total of $4,292.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Hope College to study Engineering or Medicine.

Kilaurel Samp, daugther to Sherrie and Adam Samp

Activities and Awards:  Kilaurel attended the Excellence in Education Dessert at the Spring Lake Country Club on May 3. She also was offered the DeWitt Wallace Scholarship through Macalester College. Throughout high school she was a member of the National Honor Society, ran track all four years, played volleyball, was a member of Interact, and participated in the school’s productions her junior and senior years. Kilaurel went on the 2014 European Trip with the school and was chosen to attend the Rotary Life Leadership Conference.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend Macalester College to study International Studies and Chinese.

Erick Sievertsen, son to Jamie and Erik Sievertsen

Activities and Awards: Throughout high school Erik played varsity basketball and varsity tennis all four years. He was on the rowing team his junior year, a member of the ping pong club, and an active member of Spring Lake High School’s Chapter of the National Honor Society. He attended the John Hopkins Medical Camp and was among those of the NYSE Medical Program. Erik attended the Excellence in Education Dessert at the Spring Lake Country Club on May 3. His volunteer efforts include helping with the local food truck.
Plans after graduation: Plans to attend either the University of Michigan or University of North Carolina to study Pre-Medicine.

Tyler Strandberg, son to the late Shirley and Lynn Strandberg

Activities and Awards: While attending Spring Lake High School Tyler was involved in many activities. They include playing varsity tennis and varsity lacrosse all four years, being an active member of Business Professionals of America, the National Honor Society, Interact, Task Force, the wrestling team, ping pong club, and held office for the Executive Student Council his senior year. He attended Boy’s State and was honored at the Excellence in Education Dessert on May 3 by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation. Tyler was a Team Captain for lacrosse, wrestling, and tennis teams his junior and senior years. He was All State Academic and Honorable Mention All State in lacrosse for two years. Tyler’s community efforts include helping numerous times with the local food truck, working with the Adopt-A-Family Program, helping with church activities and the school’s blood drives.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend the University of Michigan to study either Medicine or Business.

Sarah Tanner, daughter to Michelle and Andrew Tanner

Activities and Awards: Throughout high school Sarah has been involved with Calling All Colors, the Task Force, Spring Lake’s Chapter of the National Honor Society, and played basketball, soccer, and lacrosse. In basketball Sarah was the Team Captain her freshmen and senior years. She was honored at the Spring Lake Country Club by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation on May 3 at the Excellence in Education Dessert. Her volunteer efforts include working with the Bluebird Cancer Retreat, being a Sunday school teacher, being a vacation Bible school leader, helping in the nursery and childcare room at her church, and coaching 5th and 6th grade basketball.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend either Baylor University or Clemson University to study Pre-Medicine.

Samuel Ventocilla, son to Phyllis and Mark Ventocilla

Activities and Awards: Sam attended the Excellence in Education Dessert at Spring Lake Country Club on May 3. He was also offered the Grand Valley State University’s Award for Excellence, the Lubbers Honors College Scholarship, and a Presidential Scholarship from Grand Valley State University. While attending Spring Lake High School he was the Green Group President, a member of the Diversity Club, and was an active participant in Raise Your Voice with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. He was a head coach for TCYSO his junior and senior years and went on a Mission Trip to Haiti.

Plans after graduation:  Plans to attend Grand Valley State University’s Honors College to study Computer Engineering.

Will Warmoth, son to Renee and Michael Warmoth

Activities and Awards: Will has been extremely active in extracurriculars while attending high school. These include running cross country and acting as Team Captain his junior and senior years. He was also a member of the track and field team, the National Honor Society, Film Club, the We for She Group, Honors Choir, attended Boys State, and was cast in all the school’s fall and spring productions. His senior year he was nominated as the Cast Captain. Will attended the Excellence in Education Dessert on May 3 at the Spring Lake Country Club and was honored by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation. His volunteer efforts include assisting with Camp Sunshine and the Bluebird Cancer Retreat while being employed to work within the community.

Plans after graduation:Plans to attend the University of Michigan to study either Pre-Medicine or Astronautical Engineering.

Jacob Weesies, son to Wendy Sabatino and Dirk Weesies

Activities and Awards: Jacob was honored at the Excellence in Education Dessert put on by the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation on May 3. Throughout high school he was a member and Team Captain of the Sailing Team and was a part of the swim team all four years. His senior year he qualified to compete and the State Swim Meet for the 200 Free Relay and the 400 Free Relay. His community efforts include helping out at his church.

Plans after graduation: Plans to attend a four-year college to study Engineering.
